Microsoft Edge version 44 or older manual enablement

This article explains how to manually install the Microsoft Edge extension for the XBrowser Engine 3.0. This article explains the process for Microsoft Edge version 44 or older.

In order to enable automation with the XBrowser Engine 3.0, a Microsoft Edge extension needs to be installed.

This article shows how to install the Microsoft Edge extension manually for version 44 or older. If you use Microsoft Edge version 79 or newer, see this article for more information.

Follow these steps to install the Tosca Automation extension for Microsoft Edge version 44 or older:

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Open the website about:flags.
  3. Check the option Enable extension developer features (this might put your device at risk).

  4. Restart the Microsoft Edge browser.
  5. Click on the ... button in the navigation bar of the browser and select the option Extensions.

  6. Click on the button Load Extension.

  7. Enter the path to the Tosca Edge Automation extension. The extension is located at %TBOX_HOME%Resources\EdgeExtension\TOSCAEdgeAutomation.

Confirm your entry by clicking on the Select Folder button. The Microsoft Edge browser will be enabled for XScan after a restart.

After restarting the browser, a popup window informs that extensions from unknown sources have been turned off.

  8. Click on the Turn on anyway button to allow for the browser to be steered with XScan.

If the option Keep them off has been selected, you can activate the extension manually:
    1. Click on the ... button in the navigation bar of the browser and select the option Extensions.
    2. Click on the settings icon next to the Tosca Automation Extension. The icon appears when you move the cursor over the extension.

    3. Switch the state of the Tosca Automation Extension for Microsoft Edge to On.

    4. Refresh all browser windows that you want to record with XScan. The Tosca Automation Extension for Microsoft Edge is now activated.

I have installed it but doesn't work at all.  The pop up keeps coming up though the extension is installed and i am unable to scan the page.

Hi Mrs. Kauser,

after every opening of the browser you need to click "Turn On Anyway" option to enable extension in Edge. If scanning after enabling is not working, please try to refresh your webpage and scan after that.

If this didn't answer your problem, please contact our support, they will be happy to help you.

Yes, it really doesn't work. All the instructions have been followed, it worked for the first time then it doesn't work again. Tried running the program with administrator privllege, however it is still producing the same result.

MS implemented in Edge, that unsigned Extensions are automatically disabled in Egde after every restart of the browser and in case of longer standby. As far as I know, there is no workaround for this at the moment.

Just install the extension as suggested in the article above.

As it seems, there is a problem with scanning the start page of MS Edge. Please try to load another page, and try to scan it using XScan as usual. If you are enabling the Tosca Extension after navigating to the site, please reload the page. Make also sure, that the Tosca Icon upon clicking on says "Automation possible".

Doesn't work.

After installing the extension, the message box appears again.

Edge extension works on my machine after following the steps, but while scanning with tosca, seems the objects were misalligned. Is this related to my Edge extension? Any steps required to fix it?

I have the same issue using Microsoft Edge 40.15063.0.0.

I downloaded the extension today and my objects were misaligned as well.  In the attachment, my "System Admin Menu" header is supposedly way up in the menu items.  All items on the page are behaving this way, with the exact same offset..

Also note that if I run an existing test case, it tries to click in the marked offset.   I thought is could be my zoom, but it is 100%.  It happens in maximized or partial screen mode.

Guess my last hope is to downgrade to the only offically supported Edge version, 38.14393.  However, this is concerning since my customers usually take new browser version upgrades.

Fixed in latest extension for 10.3 P2.  Offset was caused by new Edge features for saving tabs for later.

Best response I could find to my search for how to downgrade MSEdge.

Sadly, we don't have an option to downgrade the Edge browser to earlier version. However, if you're willing to roll back to previous build, then you can do it. For a month after you upgrade to Windows 10 latest build, you’ll be able to go back to your previous build version of Windows fromStart > Settings > Update & security >Recovery. This will keep your personal files, but it'll remove apps and drivers installed after the upgrade, as well as any changes you made to settings.

Mind that the newest versions of Edge (>=41) are not supported yet – check the product system requirements matrix.

Dones't work. The extention will be turnned off everytime restarting the browser. And the notification aksing to turn on not always shows after opening a URL. So test cases hardly run on Edge.

Go to Settings > TBox > XBrowser and set "Scan Edge with Internet Explorer engine" to True. This should work. If not, while in XScan window, right click on the application you want to scan and choose Html (Internet Explorer Embedded) option.

We have the same problem, as the users above.

Our nightly automated regression-portfolios and tests via DEX are not possible for MS Edge, because of the manual click on the activate message for the extension.

We use: Tosca 13 and  Microsoft Edge 44.17763.831.0

Is there any news since 2018 for unsigned extensions automatically being active in MS Edge?

Hi Mr. Gotthartsleitner,

unfortunately there are no news regarding current MS Edge extension activation.

Microsoft decided to stop current Edge development and is coming with new Chromium-based Edge browser.

Extensions in this browser should work the same way as in Chrome.

Best Regards,

Eduard Krak

Thank you for this comment. Could you please tell me which Tosca version you use? The path is correct as of 13.2.

Copy paste the link in Tosca while adding the extension, you will know the error. Somewhere '\' is missed.
