Synchronization of Offline Self-Hosted License Server with the Flexera back-office

 

Situation

The customer is using a Self-Hosted License server in the offline mode/environment. After some time, the customer experiences a decrease in License Server performance leading to License Lost events. The time frame itself mostly depends on the number of fat clients customer usages - the more fat clients are used, the shorter the time frame is. 

Solution

Use the attached archive to perform regular synchronizations between the license server and the Flexera back-office. In order to be able to use it, the user must ensure that the archive is extracted on a machine that is connected both to the internet and to the license server

After extracting the archive, please start the command prompt and navigate to the place where archive is extracted. From there, run sync.bat with the following arguments:

  1. URL of the license server ( address and port ) 
  2. Username of the license server's administrator
  3. Password of the license server's administrator

All three arguments are required.

Execution time will depend on many factors but mostly on:

  • how often the synchronization procedure is performed (more often = shorter sync time)
  • number of fat clients using the license server (more fat clients = longer sync time)
  • ...

If it is being run for the first time, the synchronization procedure can take up to a couple of hours, but the synchronizations that follow will run faster.

Therefore, at least for the initial synchronization, please ensure that the procedure is performed from a machine that has a stable internet connection.

 

If synchronization is successful, the performance and stability of Self-Hosted License server will be restored.

 

If, however, the synchronization process fails, you get a message similar to the following:

If this occurs, please follow the cleanup steps described in this article. This scenario usually occurs when there are already to many records waiting to be synchronized. Therefore, if the sync process is performed regularly, it is highly unlikely that you will encounter this situation.

Hi,

I can create a .fnesync file without issues in the first step, but when trying to upload this file to the back office (https://flex1178.compliance.flexnetoperations.com/deviceservices), I run into a connection timeout. We are using a proxy server in our company, so I guess the proxy is not configured for the Windows Console. I tried with set HTTP_proxy=proxy:port, but it does not help. Do you have an idea?

You can check how many items are waiting for a sync by accessing:
http://<licenseServerAddress>:<licenseServerPort>/api/1.0/instances/~/reports/client-sync-count

In our experience, if number is over 100 000, it can lead to upload timeouts. A workaround for this is described in this KB article.
